The outline for this story is that an Artificially intelligent army of Robots and RoboGhosts have all but eradicated mankind from the face of the planet and they are now left, bereft of meaning and significance.

* Artwork from the Daylight Hallucination Exhibition, 2009ĭuring the creation of the RoboGhost concept I developed a full story around the origins of the characters, building in a history and world for them to live in. Being interested in Artificial Intelligence, sustainability and avoiding the monotony of an every day life, Robots became my primary vehicle for communication in art and also heavily influenced my aesthetic when designing sneakers or vinyl toys. Comfort ing, even.Īnd somehow - at least just for the moment, until she had to leave… But somehow, having Susie at her side helped keep all those little fears, all those shadows, at bay.The RoboGhost characters were officially brought to the public in 2009 as a feature of my first solo art exhibition ‘Daylight Hallucinations’. She’d always imagined spending time with Susie would be endlessly exciting, but instead it was… calm. “H-hey, wait up!” Susie scrambled to keep up as Noelle started to power-walk away.Īnd together, the two of them made their way back to Noelle’s house. Though still surprised, she seemed genuinely excited. “Uh… yeah! Yeah, alright!” Susie was smiling back at her now. “You can still come with me, though! It’d be nice to have some company.”

“Oh, it’s alright! I can handle that myself,” Noelle assured. “Cause I’m not doing anything today, so maybe I could, like… carry your books for you, or…” Since you’re not scared, I wanted to, like… maybe go with you? If you wanted?” Susie offered. “It made sense in the moment!” Noelle responded, in a bright, cheerful tone that left zero room for argument. “Uhh, thanks? I think?” She could practically see the gears turning in Susie’s head. “No, of course not!” Noelle answered with a smile. Then Noelle started laughing, which only made her even more confused. Susie stopped, looking stunned and confused. “Are you scared of me?” They both asked at the same time. It looked like she had something else she wanted to say, so why wasn’t she saying it…? Well, there was one reason she could think of. Noelle tilted her head looking at Susie, who still wouldn’t meet her eyes. “Wait,” Susie said quickly, and Noelle stopped. Thank you.” She accepted them, then turned to keep walking. “You, uh, forgot your books.” Susie was holding them, and she offered them out to Noelle without looking at her. “Oh! Hi, Susie,” Noelle said with a relieved smile. When she turned to look, though, she relaxed upon seeing it wasn’t the person she expected. Noelle flinched, but she didn’t shriek or jump like she once would have. She was doing SO well at ignoring everything, she didn’t notice when one of the shadows next to her was real. She ignored the scar on her finger, the pounding in her head.Įven if it meant spacing out sometimes - a lot more than usual - well, she could just ignore that too! And if you ignored just about everything about her situation, Noelle herself was doing fine. She ignored the shadows, ignored the nightmares she kept having, ignored that her best friend was missing.

More or less.Īt the very least, she was getting good at ignoring it. It had only been a couple days, but Noelle had already gotten used to it all. She wasn’t a fragile, helpless little fawn anymore. Noelle thought she knew why, but it frustrated her endlessly. The same way she told herself it was just an ordinary bad dream.)Īnd now everyone was looking at her different. (The nightmare had happened after Berdly went missing, of course. The stress over school, and home, and her dad being sick, and Berdly being gone… The same stress that had caused that nightmare in the first place. It was just part of the stress, she told herself. Standing just off to the side, just barely out of view.Īnd whenever she turned to look, there was nothing there. Like something was hiding from her… Or someone was following her. Whether it was broad daylight or the middle of the night, she’d see shadows out of the corner of her eye. Ever since that nightmare, it felt like Noelle kept seeing things.
